T. Thomas Fortune: The Most Famous Person You Never Heard of

T. Thomas Fortune was one of the most prominent African American journalist, newspaper editor and publisher of the late 19th & 20th Centuries. He was born into slavery in 1856 in Marianna, Florida.  Fortune attended Howard University in 1876, with the intention of studying law, but veered off into journalism, and used his newspaper The New York Age (Brooklyn) to speak truth to power. He was a founding member of the first successful Black political organization, The National Afro American League in 1890, prior to the Niagra Movement and NAACP.
