Major Mixed Use Development Planned For Brick Church (Shop Rite) Shopping Plaza
EAST ORANGE, NJ - Last week the Brick Church Opportunity Zone Fund 1, LLC made application to the East Orange Planning Board for site plan approve of a development project that would greatly change the landscape of Dr. MLK Jr. Blvd aka ’Shop Rite Shopping Plaza’.
Their proposal is to create a new development named, The Crossings @ Brick Church Station. This development proposes to create 820 units of housing and almost 200,000 square feet of retail space; with plans to construct a brand new state-of-the-art Shop Rite as the anchor business of this project.
The 820 housing units will be split between two building on the lots currently housing Shop Rite and all surrounding properties bordered by Harrison Street on one end and Halsted on the other. The development will provide 1,588 off-street parking spaces and 22 bicycle parking spaces.
The Developers touted as a key element of their planned design to construct a decorative central promenade with direct access from Dr. MLK Jr. Blvd to the Brick Church Train Station.
In conversation with officials close to the project they feel the reference to the Brick Church Station is in acknowledgement to the rising popularity of this highly used train stop and in concert with several successful developments in the area (Orange, Bloomfield, Montclair, etc.) that have married rail service to NYC to market rate and even upscale housing.
The Planning Board approved the site plans on Wednesday August 21, 2019.
