LIVINGSTON, NJ — A panel of corporate and government leaders as well as the mayors of several Essex County towns will come together at the eighth annual “Meet the Mayors” event at its new location, the Westminster Hotel in Livingston, on April 7 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., to discuss major issues affecting the state.

Featuring guest speakers Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver, PSE&G President David Daly, NJ Transportation Acting Commissioner Diane Gutierrez Scaccetti and Clara Maas President Mary Ellen Clyne, some of the hot topics over breakfast will include energy, healthcare and infrastructure.

After seeing nearly 200 guests attend last year’s event, West Caldwell Mayor Joseph Tempesta, who has been actively involved in the event over the last few years, said he was looking forward to hearing what this year’s panelists have to say.

“It’s a nice event because we typically get 15-20 mayors—and not only do we get good speakers on the business side, but it’s also nice because last year, we talked about a lot of topics that were important,” said Tempesta. “It’s a great event to get a cross-smattering of urban and suburban mayors and small and big businesses, and it’s just a good setting.”

West Orange Mayor Robert Parisi, who attends every year, said the event is a great opportunity to hear from other mayors about some of the issues that they are facing that are similar to those being faced in his own town, and to discuss ways of working together to serve their residents.

Livingston Mayor Ed Meinhardt, who will make his first appearance at this year’s Meet the Mayors breakfast, echoed these sentiments. He said he was enthusiastic about participating in the event for the first time as well as listening to the panel discussions.

“Not only listening, but learning about what’s happening within the state and especially what challenges and issues other mayors are facing in their own towns as well, and to see how we can help each other,” he said.

The West Orange, Millburn-Short Hills, North Essex, Maplewood, South Orange and Livingston Chambers of Commerce (otherwise known as the ICCC) are hosting this event in conjunction with the New Jersey State of Municipalities.

Ira Drucks, president of the Livingston Area Chamber of Commerce, said that it’s "always nice to know what your neighbor communities are doing to promote their own businesses and how their own local government is involved.”

“With the tremendous support we get from our own Livingston Township Council, I would like to know what the mayors are doing in their own towns when it come to local businesses,” he said. “Are there any ideas or programs I can learn from listening to the different mayors attending this event? As we are all trying to accomplish the same objectives, I hope to come out of the meeting with new ways to help our own Livingston Chamber to grow.”

North Essex Chamber of Commerce President Michael Daniels added that it’s exciting to have this type of outlet for the community and its local leaders to interact on a personal level as well as to “get their perspectives on the direction of their local municipalities.”

“[The event] also gives residents an opportunity to provide input on their perspective of how things are going and what they’d like to see,” he said. “I’m really excited to participate and I look forward to this event every year.”

Sheila Oliver - New Jersey Lieutenant Governor


Oliver, a Newark native and graduate of the Newark Public School System, has resided in East Orange for more than 40 years. She began her career working in municipal government, serving as the director of the Office of Youth Services and Special Projects in Newark, within the Mayor’s Office of Employment and Training.

In 1996, Oliver became an Essex County Freeholder, and served on the Board of Chosen Freeholders until 1999. She has also spent a significant number of years serving on the boards of voluntary non-profit organizations.

Oliver was elected to the NJ General Assembly in 2003, representing District 34, which currently includes East Orange, Orange, Montclair and Clifton. During her tenure, she has chaired the Human Services Committee and served on various other committees as well.

In 2010, she became the Speaker of the General Assembly, and served as Speaker until 2014. She became only the second woman in New Jersey’s 300-year history to serve as Speaker, and the second African-American woman in the United States to lead a legislative house.

David Daly - PSE&G President

Daly was elected president and chief operating officer (CEO) of Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G), New Jersey’s oldest and largest regulated gas and electric delivery utility, in 2017. Prior to his current position, Daly served as president and CEO of PSE&G Long Island.

Since joining PSE&G in 1983, Daly has held a variety of positions in utility operations and support services. Earlier in his career, he held various first-and second-line supervisory positions in fossil generation plant operations, and was a senior consultant at Metzler & Associates and UMS Group.

He has an electrical engineering degree from the State University of New York Maritime College, and a Master of Business Administration from Rutgers University.

Diane Gutierrez Scaccetti - NJ Transportation Acting Commissioner

Gutierrez-Scaccetti was born in Newark native and is a graduate of Rutgers University.

Gutierrez-Scaccetti was appointed Acting Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Transportation on December 2017. She is a transportation professional with more than 28 years in the industry, and 34 years in government service. She possesses extensive executive, operational and planning knowledge.

Most recently, she served as the executive director and CEO at Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise, which managed more than 460 centerline miles and a five-year capital program in excess of $6 billion under her leadership. She spent 21 years prior to that at the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, where she also served as executive director.

Her accomplishments and leadership have been recognized by the Executive Women of New Jersey, WTS Central Florida Woman of the Year, and Orlando Business Journal’s 2015 CEO of the Year for the Public Sector.

Dr. Mary Ellen Clyne - Clara Maas President

Clyne has served as the president and CEO of the RWJBarnabas Health facility Clara Maas Medical Center in Belleville since 2010. She is currently the only woman heading an Acute-Care Community hospital in Essex County.

She oversees all initiatives supporting the delivery of patient care, financial stability, strategic planning, capital improvements, renovations, new construction, quality, performance improvement, patient experience, patient safety and community relations. Clyne also brings 33 years of diverse health care experience as a Registered Nurse, Adjunct Professor, Prolific Author, Researcher and a seasoned Health Care Executive who has a proven track record of clinical growth and an expansive knowledge of the Affordable Care Act and population health innovation.

Prior to her current position, Clyne held nursing positions in The General Hospital Center at Passaic, Hospital Center at Orange and Overlook Hospital. She was also the first person to earn her bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees in nursing at Seton Hall University, where she served as a clinical and adjunct professor. Clyne presented many poster sessions, authored peer reviewed published papers and was a contributing author for a textbook chapter.

Clyne has received a variety of personal awards and recognition, including being recognized by the Nutley Board of Commissioners for her leadership and contributions to the well-being of others; receiving a Humanitarian Award from the John V. Kelly Memorial Foundation and a Newark Community Health Centers, Inc. Distinguished Service Award in recognition of her leadership in the Greater Essex County communities; and being named Essex County “Irishwoman of the Year” by county and state officials at the 10th Annual Essex County Irish Heritage Celebration in March of 2013.
