TAPinto.net CEO and Publisher Michael Shapiro appeared on “One on One” with Steve Adubato Thursday night and answered questions about the role of hyperlocal online news media.

The interview was broadcast on WNYY, NJTV and WNET. Adubato closed by saying that “Michael Shapiro, he is on the cutting edge of media.“

Shapiro answered a wide-range of questions about TAPinto.net and its 5.5 million readers and revealed some interesting statistical trends about online, local news.

“I think there is the greatest demand for local news coverage,” Shapiro said. “We see that in our statistics. Sixty-seven percent of our readers come from mobile devices, so print newspaper can’t service those people.

“The other interesting thing is that more and more older Americans are reading their news online. In terms of our demographics of our own site a great majority of our readers are 45 and older. In fact, 20 percent of our readers are 65 and older. This notion that older people don’t read online isn’t true.”
