(EAST ORANGE/ORANGE, NJ) - As a part of a series of informational community seminars hosted by Assemblywomen, Angela V. McKnight (Jersey City), Shanique Davis Speight (Newark), and Britnee N. Timberlake (East Orange), tonight they will take on the issue of unemployment during COVID-19. Since the pandemic began, the NJDOLWD has paid out $1.4 billion: $727 million from the State and $690 million in federal assistance to 622,000 workers. However, many residents are still waiting for their check.

The Facebook Live/Zoom event will feature special guests, Commissioner of NJ Dept. of Labor and Workforce Development, Robert Asaro-Angelo, Assemblyman and labor leader Thomas P. Giblin (Montclair), and Assemblywoman and NJ State Budget Chair Eliana Pintor Marin (Newark).

Timberlake and Giblin both represent East Orange, Orange, Clifton, and Montclair at the NJ State Assembly.

In a joint statement, by McKnight, Speight, and Timberlake, they said:

"The issue of unemployment is a top concern. Many people who applied for benefits weeks ago after being laid off, are still awaiting their money. People are experiencing physical and mental stress brought on by the virus; not receiving their unemployment only enhances the trauma during this time. Our offices have been working hard to respond to all residents in need and forwarding all inquiries to the Department of Labor. Tonight, we are pleased to host the Commissioner of Labor and Workforce Development as a part of our series to educate the community during COVID-19. People in need will hear directly from the Commissioner about what is going on with unemployment.”

Residents can tune in by visiting any of the three Assemblywomen's Facebook pages (highlighted above), and are encouraged share the event via Facebook's "Watch Party” feature to further spread the information to those waiting on relief.

Past seminars hosted by the Assemblywomen still available for view have included:

2. Navigating Social Services During Coronavirus

3. Finances and Planning During COVID-19
