EAST ORANGE, NJ — On Thursdays, you will find a number of East Orange Seniors sitting in chairs at the Department of Senior Services (EODSS). While they are resting, they are also practicing Kemetic Yoga. Every Thursday, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. seniors from across East Orange participate in EAST ORANGE YOGA for SENIORS. The class is free and open to East Orange seniors.
Kemetic Yoga is an ancient Egyptian system of yoga enlightenment based upon the practices of physical movements combined with controlled deep breathing and meditation. Class is lead by certified Kemetic Yoga Instructor, Jillian Faulks-Majuta, who believes that yoga is more than stretching the body. As a rising Holistic Health Coach, Jillian includes discussion about nutrition, offers sample recipes and response to the health needs of class participants. Over the past year and a half program participants have shared experiences of increased relaxation, reduced stress and increased balance and flexibility. The highlight of offering chair yoga for the EODSS is hearing participants share their doctor’s responses to improved health during visits.
The East Orange Department of Senior Services has now been offering Kemetic Yoga for seniors for about two years. This gentle flow is done mostly from the chair with some time spent each class in standing poses to increase strength and balance. The Yoga Skills Method of Kemetic Yoga was created by Master Instructor Yirser Ra Hotep.
Advanced registration is not required. According to Jillian Faulks-Majuta, the benefits you may experience include increased concentration, patience, energy & flexibility; reduces stress, and improved circulation and overall health.
