Frances Clayton Gray November 1, 1943 – September 23, 2019

EAST ORANGE, NJ — During August 2019 the City of East Orange was all abuzz with celebration honoring the late tennis star and humanitarian, Althea Gibson. However, working behind the scene to make it all happen was Fran Gray. Gray was instrumental in organizing and implementing the program elements that made the Althea Gibson tribute a tremendous success.

Her passion was establishing the legacy of Althea Gibson. She facilitated in the creation of the Althea Gibson postage stamp as well as a statue dedicated by the USTA at the Billy King National Tennis Center in NY in her honor.

Though Fran worked passionately as the Executive Director of the Althea Gibson Foundation and as the Executrix of the Althea Gibson Estate, she was an accomplished business woman in her own right. Gray was owner and operator of the Charleston Harbor Restaurant in East Orange for 10+ years. During her career she also served as nonprofit administrator for Tri-City People Corp.

Gray leaves to mourn two brothers, many nieces, nephews, the Gethsemane Baptist Church family, many friends and loved ones.
