EAST ORANGE, NJ - The Mayor’s Office of Employment and Training partnered with Grades4life to give youth from East Orange Work Experience through a summer internship program.
Grades4life is a local nonprofit organization that facilitates programs and technology for youth and partners with businesses, schools, and communities. As part of this program young people got to learn and enhance invaluable skills including, marketing, public speaking, resume building, event planning, and more. These students ages 15-21 directed marketing videos, participated in mock interviews, met with community leaders, lead community development projects and presentations over the course of the 6 week program. Lead by Asiya Nasir and Chris Johnson, the program is about teaching these youths skill-sets that will stay with them for life.
All the projects the youths worked on were about developing ways to improve and create partnerships throughout the community. The interns developed a Community Partnership Forum event where they invited local business owners and stakeholders to come out and be a part of developing partnerships for the community through the Grades4life program.
The presentation and event was developed and directed by the students as they put to use some of the skills they learned over the summer. The event took place on August 7, 2019 in which city officials, local business owners, and school administration came out to be a part of and support.
During the event the students introduced the community rewards program where businesses can partner with local schools and organizations and not only grow their own businesses however also create a positive impact.
