ORANGE, NJ - Three local schools in the City of Orange Township won the top "Safe Routes to School" awards for the third year in a row. This year, Park Avenue School, Oakwood Avenue Community School and Heywood Avenue School won gold, silver and bronze certifications respectively. The honors were awarded by "New Jersey Safe Routes to School", a program created by the New Jersey Department of Transportation, to encourage safer and more accessible walking and bicycling environments for children in New Jersey through education, training, and research.

Thousands of students, families, community partners, and elected officials around the country celebrated Bike to School Day and the benefits of biking and walking to school during Bike Month in May. This year more than 3,200 schools participated around the country.

Mayor Dwayne D. Warren, Esq. said, "Our City is proud to be home to the top three schools in the 2018 Safe Routes to School Awards in our state. These awards would not have been possible without the hard work of the Orange Board of Education, the Orange Police Department and my Administration. Congratulations to all our winners!"
