EAST ORANGE, NJ - East Orange Democratic Committee Chairman Leroy Jones and his supporters nearly pulled of the unprecedented feat of keeping secret the identity of the party’s nominee for mayor. But much to their chagrin, the proverbial cat got out the bag; and Monday afternoon East Orange Council Chairman Ted Green made it official: He is running for the office of mayor of East Orange.

A multitude of supporters and well wishers gathered at the corner of Steuben Street and Winthrop to share in the announcement. Standing with Councilman Green were a host of elected officials, mayors from various cities, family and lifelong friends.  Notable among his supporters was his Honorary Campaign Chair, Assemblywoman Sheila Oliver. Assemblywomen Oliver gave a rousing speech and introduction for her candidate.

Councilman Green followed with a warm and heartfelt address to the audience. He explained that Steuben Street was selected as the location for his announcement because this is the street he grew up on as a boy hoping to one day make a difference in the town he love so much.

Several supporters spoke of Green’s long history of working in East Orange. He’s held numerous jobs, and has served in a number of high profile positions. However, aside from the many administrative and political accomplishment he is known for, one of the more endearing activities mentioned among the folk that participated was his commitment to gather young men together to shovel snow for seniors for free. “More than any other tie in history, our citizens are seeking servant-leaders”, said Assemblywoman Oliver. “Ted’s proven role as a civic and elected leader demonstrates that philosophy and ability to lead our city as mayor will benefit th entire East Orange community.”
