EAST ORANGE, NJ - The McDonald’s restaurant located at 375 Central Avenue in East Orange, owned and operated by Jessica Quintana, held its annual “Back to School” event on Sunday September 1, 2019. The event provided school supplies for children on their way back to school.
Ms. Quintana has been devoted to giving back to the local community and uses her establishment as a launching pad. Each year, she works with community partners to give away hundreds of backpacks, notebooks, pencils, and other essential school supplies.
Prior to using the familiar East Orange McDonald’s with its sizable lot, Qunintana held the event at her Broad Street, Newark, establishment with limited space. Every year at this event, backpacks are given away to elementary and middle school aged kids, along with happy meals, haircuts for the boys, and manicures for the girls.
This year 253 Happy meals were given away, along with 300 backpacks and 40 haircuts. Volunteers who Ms. Quintana has known for years, as either recipients or participants from the original pioneering events in Newark, helped out the kids as they buzzed around in excitement. The event was attended by 4th ward, Councilman Casim Gomez and 12 officers from the East Orange Police Department, all showing their solidarity with the community.
Ms. Quintana shared thoughts at the end of the event, commenting; “I think it’s great that the community comes together. It’s great that I have local young men who were from the community and are now giving back with me. So, I think that’s a plus that if they can do it, we can pass it on and get other kids to do it. We have to start changing the way we think and everybody gives back a little bit we can change everything.”
