TRENTON, NJ – Following the President’s hate-filled remarks targeting Congresswomen of Color Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, Ayanna Pressley and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez – also referred to as the ‘Squad’ – Assemblywoman Britnee N. Timberlake (D-Essex, Passaic) released the following statement:

“One of the greatest aspects of this country is our right to free speech and its power to help us continuously improve as a society. That freedom means it is not only our privilege, but our responsibility to speak out when something isn’t right.

“I am proud of the ‘Squad’ of Congresswomen who have challenged the President’s damaging rhetoric and policies as they fight to bring America into the future. President Trump’s hateful remarks that incited his supporters to chant ‘send her back’ about an American citizen are disrespectful and will not be tolerated.

“It is unbelievable that we must describe the leader of this country as racist in 2019, yet it is undeniable that his words and actions are tearing America apart. Elected leaders should celebrate diversity and work towards uniting the people of their countries, not sow hatred and perpetuate division.

“I stand with these four Congresswomen and call upon the American people to condemn flawed leadership when they see it, sending a message to this president that his actions are unacceptable.

“To paraphrase the great Maya Angelou, we must leave behind terror and fear as we rise together.”
