EAST ORANGE, NJ - Regrettably, the EOSFA First Ward Urban Farm Planning Meeting scheduled for Thursday January 11, 2018 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church 153 Glenwood Avenue is temporarily postponed.

The East Orange Sustainable Food Alliance (EOSFA) has been organizing for the past few months to develop innovative approaches to urban agriculture in the City of East Orange.

The Alliance is an initiative intended to reconfigure the City of East Orange's food ecosystem.  Their mission is to develop an urban farm system that will empower East Orange to become a farm food-producing community.

EOSFA is comprised of a group of individuals representing the Veterans Administration, New Jersey Health Care System, the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station and Rutgers Cooperative Extension, the City of East Orange, Department of Policy, Planning, and Development, Newark Science and Sustainability, Newton Brown USA and several others, working together to encourage sustainable development in the City of East Orange.

Their plan is to improve the lives of East Orange residents by ensuring healthy lifestyles; enhancing and protecting environmental resources; ensuring economic growth and agricultural sustainability; and improving food delivery, safety, and nutrition.

While urban agriculture alone will not solve the many dilemmas of our food system from ecological collapse to inequitable access to healthy food; it can be part of a constellation of interventions needed to reform the food system into one that is more socially just, ecologically sound and economically viable.

EOSFA efforts have already produced fruitful results, beginning with the success of the East Orange Farmers Market at City Hall Plaza from August-October 2017, their recent award of the CSX Transporting Healthy Food Grant to assist in retrofitting a school bus as a mobile farmers market, and the City's acquisition of a 3.5 acre lot that EOSFA envisions as the East Orange Urban Farm.  East Orange is already becoming a more sustainable community.

The postponement is necessary in light of at the new municipal administration and the necessity of ensuring proper briefings prior to community engagement.
