NEWARK, NJ – The U.S. Department of Justice Newark Office (DOJ) issued a warning that earlier this afternoon (approximately 1 PM) there was an armed carjacking at the corner of Mulberry and Kinney Streets. The victim was driving a Lexus SUV and was “bumped” from the rear.  The victim stopped the vehicle and was approached by 2 males wearing hooded sweatshirts.  One of the suspects hit the victim in the head with a handgun and the weapon discharged.  The suspects fled the location and Newark police responded.  As of 3 PM there has been no sighting of the suspects.

DOJ, “This incident should serve as a reminder to be aware of your surroundings.   This is a classic carjacking technique that everyone should be familiar with.   As always, please be vigilant and safe as you are traveling in Newark and elsewhere”.
