EDISON, NJ – Thirty-six Edison high school seniors joined approximately 16,000 students in being named as a National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) Semifinalist in the 64th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These students will now have an opportunity to vie for one of approximately 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million that will be offered next spring. A list of the semifinalists from Edison is below.

According to NMSC, to be considered for a Merit Scholarship® award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. About half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar® title stated the organization in a statement announcing the semifinalists. NMSC, a not-for-profi t organization that operates without government assistance, was established in 1955 to conduct the annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

NMSC stated that over 1.6 million juniors from approximately  22,000 high schools entered the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program based on their 2017 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT® ) scores.  This represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors.  To become a  Semifinalist,  the student must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT® scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test.
