FLORHAM PARK, NJ — AAA predicts that 1.25 million New Jerseyans will travel 50 miles or more from home during the Independence Day holiday weekend, a slight increase over the 1.24 million that traveled last year, and the highest since 2010, when 1.26 million traveled. (Nationally, AAA predicts that nearly 42 million will take a trip, the highest number of travelers since 2007.)

Fourth of July Weekend is one of the three summer driving holidays, thus the majority of travelers — in the Garden State and nationally — will arrive at their destination by car.

Automobile
• New Jersey – 1,061,778 (84.7% of travelers), a 0.8% increase from last year
• Nationally – 35.490 million (84.7% of travelers), a 0.7% increase from 2014

Air
• New Jersey – 94,206 (7.5% of travelers), an increase of 1.4% over 2014.
• Nationally – 3.208 million (7.7% of travelers), an increase of 1.5% from last year.

Train, Bus, or Other Mode
• New Jersey – 98,341 (7.8% of travelers), a 3.2% increase from 2014
• Nationally – 3.205 million (7.6% of travelers), an increase of 0.5% from Independence Day 2014

“Independence Day is typically the busiest  summer travel holiday for this reason, so it makes sense that more people are planning a trip than in the last five years,” said Cathleen Lewis, Director of Public Affairs and Government Relations.

Rising income, a strong employment market, and gas prices still well below 2014 levels are prompting more Americans to take holiday trips this year.

“Overall Americans are planning to travel in record numbers,” added Lewis. "Fourth of July gas prices are expected to be the lowest in at least five years, a welcome sign for those planning a holiday road trip.”

Independence Day is the King of the Road

Today’s national average price for a gallon of gasoline is $2.78, 90 cents less than the average price one year ago. In New Jersey, the average price for a gallon of gas is $2.61, 96 cents lower than 2014.

Recent Independence Day gas prices (average per gallon), in New Jersey:

  • 2015: $2.61 (as of June 26, 2015)
  • 2014: $3.67
  • 2013: $3.48
  • 2012: $3.30
  • 2011: $3.59
  • 2010: $2.60

With Independence Day being a significant driving holiday, AAA expects to rescue nearly 360,000 motorists at the roadside, with the primary reasons being dead batteries, flat tires and lockouts. AAA recommends motorists inspect their vehicle and check the condition of their battery and tires before hitting the road. Members can download the AAA Mobile app, visit AAA.com or call 800-AAA-HELP (222-4357) to request roadside assistance.
