NJYT's 25th summer theatre production that is free to those that audition and are cast in the show. It's an intense summer of high quality theatre training.
This summer, New Jersey Youth Theatre (NJYT) is presenting an original musical, Midnight Madness, a re-imagining of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, transporting Shakespeare’s work to a contemporary urban landscape. Performances will begin July 20 at the Wharton Institute for the Performing Arts at 60 Locust Avenue in Berkeley Heights, NJ. Auditions will be held at the Wharton Institute on Saturday, April 1, from 1PM-5 PM and at the Audio Inc. Studios at 172 W. Westfield Avenue in Roselle Park on Saturday, April 8 from 10AM-5PM. Dance callbacks will also be at the Audio Inc. studios on April 8 at 6PM. Callbacks to read will be on Saturday, April 15 by appointment.
Midnight Madness’ very current plot includes Theo (baritone), newly elected Republican Mayor, who announces his engagement to Milly (mezzo), his Democratic opponent. Milly gives up her political aspirations so focus will be on Theo. Titania, Fairy Queen (soprano/dancer) and Theo’s supporter and Oberon, Fairy King (baritenor) and Milly’s supporter dispute the credibility of the election, causing the power to go out in NYC. Puck (baritenor), Oberon’s sprite, uses magic to confuse several characters lost in a dark Central Park: the lovers, Lydia (soprano/belt) and Sander (baritenor, Helena (mezzo/belt) and Detrick (baritenor), and the Queen’s Thespians, a community acting troupe (comic character men) rehearsing for the Mayor’s talent contest. Reflecting the ideal example of Republicans and Democrats actually working together, Theo supports Milly running for Senate. The Thespians win the contest, and lovers are partnered appropriately. With a lush and catchy score by Jack Bender and charming and inventive lyrics and book by Cynthia Meryl, the result is a silly, madcap, jovial romp whose audiences will leave the theatre in great cheer.
Auditioners should choose audition songs from a Broadway Musical and bring sheet music in the correct key, a resume, and a headshot. Rehearsals are June 2 - 17 (Fridays evenings, Saturdays and Sundays only) and June 19-July19: (Mondays-Thursdays: 6PM-10/11PM, Saturdays and Sundays: 10AM-6PM).
