Boys Basketball: Bears Capture Their First Win of the Season in Nail-Biter Against J.P. Stevens, 38-37

EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ - In East Brunswick’s second home game, the Bears Boys Basketball Team pulled out a thrilling victory over the J.P. Stevens Hawks. Both teams went back and forth all night long hitting timely shots throughout the game, but EB hit the most important shot to pull out a 38-37 win.

The Bears started out hot after trailing 2-0 right from the start as a result of a technical foul. After the Hawks took an early lead, senior Mitchell Pingoy hit two quick threes to take a 6-2 lead for EB. It was a low scoring affair for both teams as the first quarter ended with East Brunswick out in front, 10-9.

With about three minutes left in the second quarter, the Bears were trailing the Hawks 18-16. Junior Xavier Fitzgerald took the ball inside and finished with a beautiful and-1 layup to take a 19-18 lead. On the very next possession, Senior Brandon Rosenthal had a layup of his own extending the EB lead. With a minute remaining in the half, Rosenthal finished with another layup and the Bears possessed a 23-22 lead going into the second half.

In the third quarter the Hawks regained the lead as they were winning 31-26 with three minutes remaining. By the end of the third quarter the Bears clawed their way back into the game and had a one point lead entering the final quarter.

The fourth quarter was low scoring as both teams tallied five points but EB hit some clutch shots down the stretch, while the Hawks failed to convert on free throws. With less than 20 seconds remaining in the game the Bears were losing 37-35. The Bears found Senior Ryan Crocco at the top of the three point line and he sank the bucket to take a one point lead for EB. J.P. Stevens had another chance to answer back after they missed a shot attempt, both teams were assessed technical fouls. The Hawks were given two free throws but both shots were missed. J.P. Stevens still had possession and failed on another shot attempt to give the Bears a thrilling 38-37 victory.
