Colorful Holi Festival comes to Cora Hartshorn Arboretum

MILLBURN, NJ - The Cora Hartshorn Arboretum, in partnership with the Indian American Association of Millburn-Short Hills, is hosting a Holi Fest celebration. Come out on March 12 from 12:00-2:00 and 3:00-5:00 to see the colors will be flying. 

According to Holifestival.org, Holi Fest, an ancient Indian celebration of the triumph of "good" over "bad" that is marked with "Dhuleti," the day the play of colors happens. People take extreme delight in spraying color water on each other with pichkaris or pouring buckets and buckets of it. Singing Bollywood Holi numbers and dancing on the beat of dholak is also a part of the tradition. Amidst all this activity people relish gujiya, mathri, malpuas and other traditional Holi delicacies with great joy.

Holi is celebrated on Phalgun Purnima which comes in February end or early March. The colorful festival bridges the social gap and renew sweet relationships. On this day, people hug and wish each other 'Happy Holi'.

Even the paint colors have significance meaning: red for purity,
green for vitality, blue for calm and sedateness and yellow for pious feeling.

Guests will enjoy a guided walk through the woods with an Arboretum naturalist, live Indian music and performances, Indian snacks and tea. Additionally, guests will get a sneak-peek at the Arboretum’s nearly-completed Stone House Nature Center! Joining the festivities on Sunday will be Miss NJ USA, Chhavi Verg, the second-ever Indian-American to win this prestigious contest. A strong proponent of women’s equality, empowerment and education, Ms. Verg will be on hand to meet and greet guests at the Arboretum from 12:00 – 12:30 pm and again from 3:00 – 3:30 pm.  

Celebrate Holi this year at the Cora Hartshorn Arboretum in Short Hills! Open to the public. Space is limited and large crowds are anticipated.
