EDISON, NJ – The Edison Police Department honored Anil Vennavalai, 34 with a check for $1,000 to help cover the cost to replace his laptop and backpack which were stolen while he helped rescue a woman at the Edison Train Station.

The Edison PBA Local #75 presented the Piscataway resident with the check during a small ceremony on Monday, noting in a Facebook post that it was to “thank him for his selfless act as well as a way to make up for the loss of his stolen belongings” which also included several pairs of headphones and $200.

During Friday’s morning commute, a 26 year-old woman fainted and fell from the platform onto the train tracks below. Vennavalai dropped his backpack onto the platform to help rescue the woman before a train entered the station. A thief then made off with the backpack containing the missing items.
