EDISON, NJ — Edison resident, Karen Schoenfeld, was selected out of more than 1,200 submissions to represent her flag artwork for ‘The Flag Project’ at Manhattan’s Rockefeller Center.

‘The Flag Project’ is a new exhibition that was brought to life by 193 artists from around the world. Out of the 193 selected, 19 are New Jersey residents. The art installation also features work by New York residents, as well as those from Toronto, Houston, and Buenos Aires.

The art contest guidelines called for creators to design original flags based on themes of love, unity, and diversity that also represented an aspect of New York City. Typically, the 193 poles surrounding the area display the United Nations’ member countries’ flags, individual state flags, or timely decorations.

Born and raised in the Hudson Valley, Schoenfeld learned about the contest through social media. She is a Pratt Institute graduate who earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in fine arts and photography and currently works as a senior product designer in NYC.

Schoenfeld, a Designer, has been in the industry for 30 years and stays up-to-date with trends globally and within fashion. She pulled from her creative background to design a flag inspired by current events, such as COVID-19 and police brutality that sparked protests.

“I wanted my flag to represent unity, respect, and love in a trying time. We must come together as a nation; white, yellow, brown, straight, gay, democrat, republican, old and young because we are Americans,” Schoenfeld said. “In the end, love does win.”

Schoenfeld said she is thrilled to be representing the state of New Jersey and New York in this once of a lifetime opportunity.

“It makes me feel proud, and it fills my heart with happiness to be a part of this historical moment,” Schoenfeld said.

About 180 flag designs were submitted by the public, while the others were created by notable artists including Carmen Herrera, Christian Siriano, Faith Ringgold, Hank Willis Thomas, Jeff Koons, Jenny Holzer, KAWS, Laurie Anderson, Marina Abramović, Sanford Biggers, Sarah Sze, Shantell Martin, and Steve Powers.

The Flag Project will be on display at The Rink at Rockefeller Center until August 23rd.
