EDISON – A tenant at a Weston Forbes Court apartment escaped injury today (Wednesday) after a fire started in the crawl space under her two-story unit, Fire Marshall Tim Morley said.

The female tenant told authorities she awoke to find smoke filling her apartment just before noon and she ran outside before township firefighters arrived. The woman was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation by emergency medical technicians from JFK Medical Center.

The blaze was extinguished within 30 minutes, but it caused heavy damaged to the interior of the unit making it uninhabitable. There was also minor smoke damage to neighboring apartments. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Morley said.

The township Office of Emergency Management and Health Department are helping to relocate the tenant in nearby apartment in the same complex.
