Holy Savior Cheerleading Squad Takes Season by 'Storm'

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – Holy Savior Academy’s (HSA) ‘Biddy’ Cheerleading Squad, the Storm,  recently completed their 2017-2018 season with a first place win in their division at Cheerfest. Held May 12 at Six Flags Great Adventure, the annual multi-state competition featured teams from throughout New Jersey.

“This cheer season has been such an exciting time for these girls; some of them have been cheering together since kindergarten and others just started this year, but everything seemed to come together this season and just click,” said Head Coach Karen Gaffney.

During the 2017-2018 cheer season, the Biddy squad, which is comprised of students in kindergarten through fourth grade, also placed first in three Catholic Cheerleading Coaches Association of New Jersey (CCCANJ) competitions – the Immaculate Conception Somerville Competition, St. Mary School Middletown Competition, and the Our Lady of Victories Sayreville Competition – as well as took home second place honors at the St. James Woodbridge Competition and St. Matthias Somerset Competition.

“Holy Savior's ‘Biddy’ squad has grown and reached new achievements over the past season,” said Gaffney. “The girls worked hard and I was so happy watching them finally get the awards they deserve!"

The cheer squad, which is open to both HSA students and deanery parishioners, provides a structured environment for girls to learn new skills and form bonds that grow from year to year. Throughout the season, which runs from September to May, the school’s ‘Biddy’ squad also cheers for the Storm, HSA’s basketball team.

Along with Gaffney, the ‘Biddy’ squad is coached by Maralyn Thomas & Cindy Trunell. Squad members include Asia Davis, Meagan Gaffney, Alex German, Sofia Giraldo, Bella Lester, Ava Trunell-Laputka, Rihanna Monroy, Amalya Mont, Ashley Mont, Gabriella Parache, Aiyanna Robinson, and Taylor Robertson.
