(September 17, 2015) In a continuing effort to bring the most exciting new programs to Westfield, the Westfield Memorial Library has become a partner in the “Lincoln Center Local: Free Screenings Series,” one of the first libraries in New Jersey to do so.

This means that the library will be streaming free, HD quality videos of select Lincoln Center performances throughout the year. The Free Screening Series is generously funded through support from the Oak Foundation, Altman Foundation and Booth Ferris Foundation.

Library Director Phil Israel said, “We are excited to be able to bring world-class performances to the Library, and we are happy to be part of the world’s largest performing arts complex. Our goal is to continue to enrich the lives of our patrons with high-quality arts programming in their own backyard.”

The first screening of the series, the New York Philharmonic 2013 Gala with violinist Yo-Yo Man, will be shown on Saturday, October 3 at 2:00 p.m.

It was originally recorded at Avery Fisher Hall on September 25, 2013. The New York Philharmonic’s opening gala concert features music director Alan Gilbert and special guest cello soloist Yo-Yo Ma. The concert features dance-inspired orchestral works, including Azul by Osvaldo Golijov, a cello concerto written for Ma; the world premiere of an arrangement of Astor Piazzolla’s La serie del Ángel by Octavio Brunetti, commissioned by the New York Philharmonic; and a classic by Maurice Ravel, Alborada del gracioso.

The screening is free and open to Westfield Memorial Library and MURAL cardholders. (MURAL cardholders belong to the 43 libraries that are part of the Middlesex Union Reciprocal Agreement Libraries. Visit www.wmlnj.org and click on the “About Us” tab to see if your library participates.)
