Middlesex County: Region Braces For Late Winter Storm, Maybe A Foot Of Snow

MOUNT HOLLY, NJ – The National Weather Service placed much of the state into a Winter Storm Warning as a potentially major storm is forecast to hit the area tomorrow night, possibly bringing more than a foot of snow to much of New Jersey.

As of 6 a.m. Sunday morning, the National Weather Service in Mount Holly said that it is expecting a low-pressure system to develop off the coast of the Carolinas tomorrow and track northeast to the Mid-Atlantic region by Tuesday.

The storm could develop into a major Nor’easter, bringing double digit snowfall accumulations through late Monday night and all day on Tuesday, according to the forecast.

While the forecasts vary greatly, the most likely totals for the Central New Jersey region, including Middlesex County, forecasts of about 6-12 inches of snow during the storm seem the most likely, according to officials.

High winds from 15-25 m.p.h., and gusts up to 40 m.p.h., could accompany the snow, causing near blizzard conditions on Tuesday, according to the forecast.

The NWS also warns that the heavy snow could also bring tree limbs down and cause widespread power outages in its wake.

South Brunswick Chief of Police Raymond Hayducka and Township Manager Bernie Hvozdovic put out an alert Sunday saying the snow is expected to begin around 11 p.m. Monday night and continue through Tuesday with snow falling at the rate of 1-3 inches per hour at times.

A “driving snow” is expected to fall during Tuesday, accumulating 6-11 inches during the day.

“We anticipate most activities and events to be cancelled on Tuesday,” the alert said. “Based on the forecast we see few people being able to travel on area roadways Tuesday.”

Residents are reminded to keep cars off the roads prior to the storm so that plows can get through.
