SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ – A car fire closed Route 1 in both directions Wednesday morning, police said.
According to police, Officer Sal Fama was driving south on Route 1 at 9:40 a.m. Wednesday morning when he saw a vehicle driving northbound with smoke coming out of it.
Officer Fama turned around and found the vehicle had pulled off onto the shoulder at Route 1 and Northumberland Way, police said.
He then found the driver, identified by police as a 59-year-old female from New Brunswick, out of the vehicle standing on the shoulder.
The woman told the officer she was just driving her 2003 black Volvo when smoke started to appear, police said.
Fama guided the woman back to his patrol car and moved his patrol car back as smoke and flames engulfed the vehicle, police said.
The Monmouth Junction Fire Department arrived on the scene and the highway had to be closed in both directions while firefighters put out the blaze, police said.
The exact cause of the fire is unknown and the highway was reopened by 10:15 a.m.
There were no injuries, police said.
