Edison, NJ - There will be new Board of Education members come January. Newcomers Elizabeth Conway and Dr. Yuna Chen secured victories along with incumbent Ralph Errico on Tuesday. According to unofficial results released by the Middlesex County Clerk’s office, Mr. Errico received 9,746 votes, Dr. Chen received 9,222 votes, and Ms. Conway received 9,531 votes. The figures do not include provisional ballots.
Incumbent Board of Education member Shivi Prasad Madhukar failed in her bid for re-election. The unofficial results place Ms. Madhukar with 4,224 votes. Mr. Errico and Ms. Madhukar were the only two incumbents seeking re-election after incumbent Paul Distefano withdrew from the race in early September.
Ms. Conway is a retired educator who previously served as a Union representative. She unsuccessfully ran for the Board of Education in 2017 before being elected this year. Dr. Chen, a first time candidate, works in the financial industry and received a Ph.D. in Computational and Theoretical Chemical Physics from the University of Chicago. Both candidates ran on a change platform, with Dr. Chen citing the budget and the overuse of technology as her main concerns and Ms. Conway citing school safety and the curriculum. Both candidate raised overcrowding as a significant issue that they would like to see addressed.
