Edison, NJ – The Edison Zoning Board is considering granting preliminary and final site plan approval for the construction of 12 new apartments and a 22 space parking lot.
The application, made by Fox and Foxx Development, relates to a property located at 292 Central Avenue. The property is currently occupied by a single family home. An apartment complex is not a permitted use in the residential neighborhood, requiring a variance from the Zoning Board.
The proposed three-story apartment complex will include 12 single bedroom room units. Each of the proposed units will range from 866 sq. ft to 916 sq. ft. According to Fox and Foxx, it will manage the property and monitor the units to ensure that an additional bedroom will not be added to any of the units.
“The whole goal here is really to eliminate the concept of children, which I know the Board of Education is concerned about and making them all one bedroom is a disincentive for children,” said Jeffrey Lehrer, attorney for Fox and Foxx.
The proposed project will not include any affordable housing units, according to Mr. Lehrer. Situated near the Edison train station in South Edison, Mr. Lehrer stated that the apartment complex will promote “transportation oriented development.” Mr. Lehrer noted that there are already two other multi-family units in the area. He also stated that there would be no significant impact on traffic in the area, based on a review by Fox and Foxx’s traffic engineer.
The hearing on the application is scheduled to continue at the November 19 Zoning Board meeting at which time the public will have an opportunity to comment on the project.
