New Jersey State Motor Vehicle Commission Returns to South Plainfield

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – A new state Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) opened its doors in South Plainfield on Monday, just one week shy of a year since the borough’s former agency closed its doors. The office, located at 5000 Hadley Road, will provide in-person services to residents of the borough and the surrounding communities six days a week. 

“I would like to thank everyone who helped make this become a reality," South Plainfield Mayor Matt Anesh said following the agency's May 21 soft opening. "This is a big win for our residents and neighboring communities and welcome the Motor Vehicle Commission back to the borough.” 

According to the state, the internal layout of the Hadley site was designed around the agency’s new business process to better serve customers. Situated between Stelton Road and Durham Avenue and easily accessible from 287, the Hadley site offers increased parking and, on the inside, supports improved technology with updated phone, data, and security wiring. There are also additional agency counter windows and ID check stations.

According to B. Sue Fulton, director of the state DMV, the internal layout of the Hadley site was designed around the agency’s new business process to better serve customers.

“First and foremost, our mission is to be the model for excellence in motor vehicle services,” stated Fulton in a letter sent to borough officials last month. “Therefore, I am pleased to provide the residents of Middlesex County with efficient, courteous and convenient motor vehicle services.”

Last spring, the MVC in the Golden Acres Shopping Center on Oak Tree Road closed its doors after 10 years when the landlord decided not to renew the agency's lease. Prior, the agency had been run out of the Middlesex Mall. 

Since the closure, which occurred on May 13, 2017, residents in need of in-person services were left with no choice but to visit agencies in Edison, Somerset, and South Brunswick with some even traveling as far as Flemington. 

“The opening of the new South Plainfield Agency demonstrates our continued commitment to meeting the needs of our customers,” stated Fulton.

“South Plainfield would like to welcome the Motor Vehicle Commission back to the borough. We are happy that our residents will once again have the convenience of an agency right here in their hometown,” said Anesh. 

The South Plainfield Motor Vehicle Commission is located at 5000 Hadley Road. Hours of operation are as follows: Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with extended hours on Tuesdays (7:30 p.m.) and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The office is closed on Sundays and federal holidays.
