Edison, NJ -The basketball teams for the Edison Police Department and the Fire Department will face off in the “Battle of the Badges” on March 15 at St. Matthew the Apostle Church, located at 81 Seymour Avenue in Edison. Proceeds from the event will benefit the school’s academic and athletic programs.
“Participating in the ‘Battle of the Badges’ is another fine example of Edison's police officers and firefighters demonstrating their steadfast support for academic, athletic and charitable causes in our community,” Mayor Thomas Lankey said. “I am proud of their commitment to our town.”
The teams will be led by Sgt. Joseph Luistro, team captain for the Edison Police Department, and Capt. Richard Schreck, the Fire Department's team captain.
“It’s community outreach that shows that the Edison Police Department and Edison Fire Department is out there to support the community. And one of the schools in the community is Saint Matthew school in Edison. We coordinate this fundraiser for the school and the church,” said Sgt. Luistro, adding, “the community could actually speak to some of the members of the police and fire department because whether we like it or not, we are role models in the community and it almost humanizes us in terms of we’re just one of them as well.”
"Our firefighters really enjoy participating in local charitable events like this,” said fire Capt. Schreck. “It's for a worthy cause and it helps to keep our firefighters connected with the families we serve.”
At 6:30 p.m. there will be a scrimmage between St. Matthew Alumni and the St. Matthew Varsity team. The night will also feature sponsored shooting contests for 1/2 court, 3-point and bank shots.
Suggested donations for the event are $3 for adults and $1 for children. Doors open at 6 p.m
