ELIZABETH, N.J. - Congressman Robert Menendez has secured nearly $20 million in Community Project Funding for New Jersey's Eighth Congressional District in the 2024 spending bills, with $850,000 designated for the Youth Campus Expansion Project at the Institute of Music for Children (IMC). This project is vital for local youth, and the Elizabeth Development Company (EDC) has played a role in assisting IMC in obtaining the necessary funding to advance their project. The funding, secured by Congressman Menendez, will contribute to the construction of a new building, providing additional classroom space and improved ADA accessibility.
The Institute of Music for Children, now property owners since 2021, is poised for significant progress. Students served by the Institute often face limited resources and systemic barriers. The expanded facility will serve as a gateway to a world of opportunities, diversifying the range and scope of its arts initiatives through new equipment, facilities, and increased advanced professional training. The new 15,000 square foot building will house dedicated Dance, Acting, and Visual Arts Studios, a Band Room, two Piano Labs, a Strings Room, four Practice Rooms, a professional Recording Studio, along with climate-controlled storage and new administrative offices. Through expanding facilities, purpose-built spaces, and strategic partnerships, the Institute is ushering in a new era of innovation, impact, and community development.
Alysia Souder, Executive Director of the Institute of Music for Children, expressed gratitude for the funding, highlighting its importance in unlocking additional resources for the Campus Expansion and serving more urban children. She emphasized the significance of equitable asset development, particularly as a Black, Indigenous, Person of Color (BIPOC)-led institution, and underscored the shared values with the Elizabeth Development Company.
The EDC, an economic development non-profit in the City of Elizabeth, administers the city's Urban Enterprise Zone and Neighborhood Revitalization Tax Credit neighborhoods, including IMC's location. There is a pressing need to provide local youth with access to safe, affordable, and quality after-school arts programming, and this funding brings us closer to achieving that goal. The funds will directly benefit local youth interested in pursuing various arts disciplines, including singing, dancing, acting, music production, and more.
]]>ELIZABETH, N.J. - Governor Phil Murphy has declared the allocation of $20 million in American Rescue Plan Firefighter Grants to local and regional fire departments throughout New Jersey. This initiative aims to ensure that firefighters are equipped with adequate protective, cleaning, and sanitization gear. The Department of Community Affairs (DCA) distributed the grants following a rigorous application process, with the Elizabeth Fire Department and 352 other fire departments being recipients.
This announcement signifies the Murphy Administration's second allocation of American Rescue Plan (ARP) Firefighter Grants. In November 2022, DCA granted $10 million to 293 fire departments. Over the past 25 years, New Jersey legislators at both federal and state levels have consistently advocated for fire department funding, including through the establishment of the firefighter grant program, budget resolutions, and the creation of task forces to support fire safety.
Fire departments will utilize the grant funds to cover expenses related to the acquisition of protective clothing, cleaning equipment, breathing apparatuses, personal protective equipment (PPE), and other firefighting or virus protection gear, as deemed appropriate by DCA's Division of Local Government Services (DLGS).
Eligible applicants had to detail their intended use of the funding, identify key personnel managing the grant funds and equipment purchases, and obtain governing body approval for the grant application and proposed fund utilization. Grant applications were assessed based on criteria such as fire department needs, commitment to firefighter protection, and eligibility for local matches.
All local and regional fire departments in New Jersey were eligible to apply for the American Rescue Plan Firefighter Grants, which operate on a reimbursement basis. Fire departments receive reimbursement for eligible expenses upon submission of evidence of payment to DCA; no advance payment or drawdown of grant funds is provided.

ELIZABETH, N.J. - On Tuesday, February 27, 2024, at approximately 3:15 p.m., the Elizabeth Fire Department’s Tour 3 swiftly responded to a distress call reporting a house fire in the 100 block of Berwick Street.
As units were en route, multiple calls flooded in, underscoring the urgency of the situation. Engine 8 was the first to arrive on the scene and discovered heavy flames engulfing the rear of a two-and-a-half-story wood frame residence. Confirming a working fire, Engine 8 immediately initiated the Firefighter Assist and Search Team (FAST) protocol. Initial hose lines were promptly deployed to the rear of the house to prevent further spread into the interior. As the fire was found to be traveling through the voids in the wall, additional hose lines and crews were directed to the second floor and attic to contain its advance. Both ladder companies executed roof ventilation maneuvers to aid in firefighting efforts. Remarkably, Tour 3 successfully contained the fire to a single alarm, minimizing damage to the building of origin.
No injuries were reported in the incident.
