ELIZABETH, NJ - A 12-year-old city girl was pulled from the water at Sandy Hook beach on Sunday and later died, an official said.

Bianca Palma was pulled from the water by lifeguards on duty and was taken to Monmouth Medical Center where she died Monday morning, National Park Service spokeswoman Daphne Yun told TAP.

Yun did not know the circumstances of Palma’s drowning at Beach E, which is located in Monmouth County and maintained by the National Park Service. An eyewitness told the Asbury Park Press she saw the girl swimming with a boy she identified as Palma’s brother throughout the afternoon as the dad watched.

Amy Delmanto, who spoke with Asbury Park Press, said neither child went into the water past their knees, but there was a strong undercurrent that day.

Delmanto told Asbury Park Press that Palma was blue when lifeguards pulled her out of the water. Delmanto said she prayed with the girl’s mother as the brother cried and lifeguards performed CPR.

"It was the hardest thing I think I’ve ever seen another family go through in person," she told the newspaper.
