SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- Scotch Plains police are in the backyard of a house on Grant Street between Front Street and Second Street watching the movements of a black bear that officers have been following all morning on Thursday. Originally, the bear was seen roaming near Mountain Avenue and Russell Road.

"We probably tired him out by running after him. He's got his head down. I think he's exhausted," said Captain Ted Conley of the Scotch Plains police, who is on the scene.

Capt. Conley said that Fish and Wildlife experts told Scotch Plains police that they would not come out and tranquilize the bear unless it climbed a tree.

"They said if it's not bothering anybody, just leave it alone and it will head back home," added Conley, who said officers will watch the bear until after school dismisses.

Brunner School sent an email alert to parents informing them that recess had been moved inside for the day. The SPFK12 school district also sent an alert to parents advising them not to allow children to approach or feed the bear if they see it. Dissimal took place at regular times today.

TAPintoSPF will continue to update this story as information becomes available.
