ELIZABETH, NJ – Many heard the explosion early Monday morning in the area near the Elizabeth train station, where it was reported earlier that a suspicious package was found to possibly contain a pipe bomb. According to sources, the blast went off as a bomb robot was examining a device inside the package under the train tracks at around 12:40 a.m. Sources said that police suspect that there may be more bombs inside the package.
Elizabeth Police, NJ Transit Police, Union County Police, State Police and the FBI are still at the scene investigating.
According to New Jersey Transit, train service on both the Northeast Corridor and North Jersey Coastline is suspended between Elizabeth and Newark Liberty International Airport. Rail tickets and passes are being cross-honored by PATH service and NJT and private carrier buses.
