ELIZABETH, NJ - Elizabeth high school fall sports began tryouts this week with the new safety regulations put in place by the New Jersey Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA).

Football, girls tennis, boys and girls cross-country, boys and girls soccer and cheerleading were allowed to begin tryouts and practices September 14. The traditional three-season format (Fall, Winter, Spring) has been modified to a four-season format by the NJSIAA. Volleyball and Gymnastics, which are traditionally fall sports, have been pushed to season three.

The NJSIAA has extended the final season an extra month into June to make up for losing all of August. Official competitions begin on September 28 for girls tennis, October 2 for football and October 1 for all other sports.

Athletes who want to try out for any Elizabeth High School team will have to bring their own mask and 32 oz. water bottle to the field. Everyone will also have their temperature checked before the tryout or practice can begin.

New rules for the 2020-2021 school year include masks required for anyone who is not an athlete on the field. This includes referees, coaches and athletes on the sidelines.
