ELIZABETH, NJ — Donald Peterson was sworn in as the Elizabeth Fire Department’s first African American Fire Chief.

Mayor Bollwage swore in Chief Peterson in Winfield Scott Plaza just outside City Hall. Dozens of Elizabeth Firemen and members of Chief Peterson’s family attended the event.

“If we work together there is no mountain we can’t climb, no obstacle we can’t overcome and no fire we can’t put out,” said Chief Peterson.

The Elizabeth Fire Department appointed its first African American Chief just two years after Sheena Spence became the first woman to join the Elizabeth Fire Department.
