ELIZABETH, NJ – Elizabeth High School senior Ketanny Alves has been appointed as a cadet to the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado, one of the most selective institutions of higher learning in the country. The Academy typically admits only 15.4 percent of its 9,700 applicants. The candidates must be nominated by one of their state’s Congressional representatives. In addition, they must have high academic records, and a history of school and community involvement.

Alves can check off all those boxes. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Italian Honor Society president, and student government vice president. In addition, she was a participant in the Rutgers University Business Program for Youth, the USMC Summer Leadership and Character Academy, the USAF Academy Summer Seminar, and the Union County Sheriff’s Youth Academy. In addition to her 10 awards and honors, Alves has volunteered her time to Camp Fatima, a camp for children and adults with developmental disabilities. Ketanny even made time to ride with her two brothers Joe, 10, and Tiago, 7, at the Tour de Elizabeth last month.
