Elizabeth Man Arrested in Fatal Newark Hit and Run

NEWARK, NJ – An Elizabeth resident has been arrested as the driver in a hit and run, fatal accident in Newark, acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose announced.

Mauricio Silvera, 23, of Elizabeth has been charged with leaving the scene of a motor vehicle incident involving a death. He was transported to the Essex County Correctional Facility where he is being held on $150,000 bail.

The accident occurred at approximately 3:25 a.m. September 3 when Christina E. Cassidy, 25, of Jersey City was hit by a Honda Civic while crossing in the vicinity of Raymond Blvd. and McCarter Highway. She was transported to University Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 8:43 a.m.

All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until they are found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law or enter a guilty plea.The investigation by the Newark Police Department and the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force is active and ongoing. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
