ELIZABETH, NJ – Overcast skies couldn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the Portuguese community in Elizabeth who came out to cheer the Annual Portugal Day Parade, June 4.

Hundreds of flag-waving onlookers lined the parade route up Elizabeth Avenue to Broad Street, eventually reaching the Portuguese Instructive Social Club at Grove Street and Route 1 & 9. They watched groups of dancers in colorful, native costumes, marching bands, and a large representation of community groups.

This year’s Grand Marshal was Martinho Pereira, well-known in the city as the owner of Valenca Restaurant. He was joined on the dais by the Portuguese Counsel Dr. Pedro Soales de Oliveira.
