Fanwood Grille’s Soups Voted Best in New Jersey by National Food Website The Daily Meal

Ranking lists new eatery with some of the country’s most famous restaurants

FANWOOD, NJ – National food website, The Daily Meal, which has released its list of Best Soups in Every State, has chosen the soups at the Fanwood Grille (34 South Martine Avenue, Fanwood, NJ) as the best in New Jersey.

The Daily Meal wrote that “restaurants all throughout the country are making some truly great bowls of soup from scratch, and we’ve tracked down the best in every state.”  The Fanwood Grille, which opened just six months ago in July 2017, is listed among some of the country’s most notable eateries:

  • Hog Island Oyster Bar, one of the most famous restaurants in San Francisco (clam chowder);
  • Dookie Chase, one of New Orleans’ most legendary restaurants (gumbo);
  • J’s Oyster in Portland, Maine (known for its lobster stew);
  • Union Oyster House, Boston’s most famous restaurant (clam chowder); and
  • The legendary Second Avenue Deli in New York City (matzo ball soup).

New Jersey: The Fanwood Grille, Fanwood

This casual café and lunch counter serves all the classic breakfast and lunch staples (their hot dogs and steak sandwich are local legends), but it’s the soups that have really put it on the map. The variety changes daily, but expect to find butternut squash, chicken noodle, beef stew, New England clam chowder, chicken gumbo, pasta fagiolo, and/or Spanish chicken soup, all made fresh every day using only the best seasonal ingredients. -- The Daily Meal

The Fanwood Grille was selected not for just one variety, but for its overall soup selections, including:

  • butternut squash,
  • chicken noodle,
  • cream of chicken,
  • hearty beef & vegetable,
  • New England clam chowder,
  • New Orleans chicken gumbo,
  • pasta fagioli, and
  • Spanish chicken soup, among others

“Making soup has always been a passion of mine, and I take great pride in it. Already we’ve been getting calls from people asking what kind of soup we have today,” said Paul Watterson, who develops all the soup recipes at the Fanwood Grille. “I’m happy that this award brings attention to Fanwood, and I’m looking forward to making more soup!”

“I am so proud that the Fanwood Grille, which has only been open a few months in our little borough, is listed along with some of the nation’s top restaurants in food meccas such as Boston, New Orleans, New York, and San Francisco,” said Fanwood Mayor Colleen Mahr. “I’ve had the soups at the Fanwood Grille, and the honor is richly deserved.”

Located at 34 South Martine Avenue in downtown Fanwood, NJ, the Fanwood Grille features breakfast and lunch specials, soups from scratch made fresh daily, and dinners to go. The restaurant has quickly become known for its wide selection of omelets, 8-oz. burgers, legendary lobster rolls, New Orleans chicken gumbo, and the Gerry Cooney cheesesteak sandwich.
