ELIZABETH, NJ - In the City of Elizabeth there is a group of Heroes. They don't wear capes or fly, they don’t have x-ray vision nor do they run any faster than you or I. The heroes wear a uniform and are part of an elite well-trained group. They can be seen at most traffic accidents, fires or a number of other emergencies. A call to 911 sends them running to assist those in need. These are the members of the Elizabeth Fire and EMS Family, and now they are asking the community for help in their time of need for one of their own.

On July 23, while on her tour of duty, EMT Yojany Mejia suffered her own medical emergency. It was determined to be two brain aneurysms that caused her to collapse and lose consciences. Although she underwent surgery, she remains hospitalized and her road to recovery is described as a long one, by her friends and family. Mejia is not alone as many have rallied around her sending prayers and offering financial support.

A friend Evelyn Gonzalez started a GoFund Me account with an original goal of $10,000. That was quickly exceeded and the account currently has a goal of $25,000 and is just a little short at $21,000.

"She is an incredible person and friend,” said Carlos Gomez who is also an Elizabeth EMT and works with Yojany Mejia. He is encouraging everyone wanting to help, to raise money for Mejia.
