ELIZABETH, NJ—A third anniversary of a 2014 unsolved homicide in Elizabeth is fast approaching and police are seeking the public’s help to solve it, acting Union County Prosecutor Thomas K. Isenhour said Friday.
Alonso Gordon, 39, of Elizabeth was fatally shot three years ago this Saturday.
On the evening of October 14, 2014, at approximately 10:10 p.m. police and emergency medical personnel rushed to the scene and found Gordon suffering from gunshot wounds.
Gordon had been sitting on the front steps of a building on the 200 block of Pine Street in the city’s Elizabethport section when an unidentified suspect approached on foot and fired a handgun at him at close range. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The Union County Homicide Task Force and the Elizabeth Police Department uncovered surveillance video footage during a joint investigation that appears to depict the shooter rounding a street corner near the site of the homicide seconds before shots rang out. The suspect is dressed in what appears to be a black hooded sweatshirt and dark pants, and he is also wearing beige boots and a belt with a large metallic buckle.
Investigators are urging anyone who may have been in the area at the time to try and recall any suspicious activity they may have witnessed. The night of October 14, 2014 was unseasonably warm and humid, with temperatures in the low 70s around the time of the shooting.
Anyone with information about the death of Gordon is being asked to contact Homicide Task Force Sgt. Johnny Ho at 908-403-8271.
The Union County Crime Stoppers also are continuing to offer a reward of up to $10,000 for information about this case that leads to an arrest and indictment; tips can be given anonymously by phone at 908-654-TIPS (8477), via text message by texting “UCTIP” and a message to 274637 (CRIMES), or online at www.uctip.org.
