ELIZABETH, NJ - A 17-year-old was arrested in connection with a fatal daytime shooting of a city man near Mattano Park, Acting Union County Prosecutor Grace H. Park said today.
Anthony Feliciano, 25, died Tuesday afternoon from his injuries after he was shot July 26, Park said.
The prosecutor's office withheld the 17-year-old’s identity since he is a juvenile. He was arrested on juvenile complaints of aggravated assault and weapons offenses two days after the shooting on July 28, Park said.
The assault complaint was upgraded to murder today, Park said.
Feliciano was rushed to University Hospital in Newark after the initial shooting to undergo emergency treatment, according to an investigation by authorities.
A memorial with Feliciano's name on it was set up on a small bridge near the corner of Arnett and Summer streets, the same area that police had sectioned off around 4:45 p.m. on the day of the shooting. A poster filled with pictures of what appeared to be Feliciano surrounded by children was at the memorial, along with a bottle of Hennessy and Remy Martin.
On Tuesday, City Council members gave a moment of silence for Feliciano and others during a council meeting.
This is the second fatal shooting near Mattano Park recently. Ricardo Nieto, 33, was shot dead in the early morning hours on July 16 in the area of Fifth Avenue and Niles Street, officials said. The prosecutor's office released a sketch of a person of interest in that case on Aug. 16.
Authorities are asking anyone with information about the fatal shooting of Feliciano to contact Homicide Task Force Sgt. Jose Vendas at 908-358-3048 or Detective Christopher Scuorzo at 908-472-0492.
