Michael Graves College Launches Spring Workshop Series

Union, NJ - Kean University’s Michael Graves College is hosting a series of professional development workshops featuring the University’s distinguished faculty and prominent innovators in the fields of architecture and design.  The Michael Graves College Spring 2016 Workshop Series highlights leading voices discussing contemporary issues. Events are open to the public and will take place at 5:30 p.m. in room 306 of the Green Lane Academic Building on the Kean main campus in Union.

On February 25, Kean University Assistant Professor Saglinda Roberts, ASID, CID, will present Psychological, Aesthetic and Phenomenological Aspects of Natural Elements in the Built Environment. The workshop will provide a brief overview of the neurological and physiological effects of exposure to the natural elements and the historical and cultural significance of these elements within the built environment.

Denise Anderson will present Design and Promote a Stand Out Brand on March 5. Participants will formulate and define a personal or corporate brand during the workshop, translating survey findings into a compelling marketing story and distinct visual identity.

Rob Fleming, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, Director of Philadelphia University’s Masters of Sustainable Design Program will present Beyond Green: How Sustainable Design will Transform our Lives on March 17The workshop will examine new approaches to sustainable design.

On March 24, Kean University Distinguished Professor Robin Landa will present Nimble: Thinking Creatively in the Digital Age.  A nimble mind is imperative for creative professionals to thrive, according to Landa, whose 21st book titled, Nimble: Thinking Creatively in the Digital Age, was recently published by HOW Books. Nimble is based on unique teaching methodology Landa employs in her courses at Kean University's Robert Busch School of Design.

Scott Francisco, Founder and Director at Pilot Projects will present Mass Timber Construction on April 7.  A hands-on designer, strategist and cultural theorist, Francisco is a lecturer at Kean University and also teaches design at The New School. He speaks regularly across the country on workplace organizational culture and sustainability.

Michael Graves College Dean David Mohney, FAIA, will present Campus Planning in China: Wenzhou Kean University as a Case Study on April 17. The case study will explain how the planning and design of Wenzhou-Kean University balances Chinese landscape traditions and western academic models.

Julia Nevarez, Ph.D., will present Sandy and Climate Change: Governing Disaster, Adaptation and Preparedness in Urban Environments on April 21. This presentation will examine the relationship between climate change and extreme weather by focusing on the example of Hurricane Sandy and consider strategies for managing extreme climatic events.

Kean University Associate Professor Sylvio Codella, Ph.D., will lead a talk on Biomimicry April 28.  Codella’s research focuses on three overlapping areas of entomology: Biodiversity, particularly in urbanized settings; Hymenopteran Biology; and Evolutionary Ecology.

City Hall Announces Delayed Openings,Closures

ELIZABETH, NJ - Due to the impending winter storm, City Hall and the municipal courts will have a delayed open at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow, Feb. 9, according to City Hall spokeswoman Kelly Martins.

In addition, the city's senior centers will be closed with the exception of Stephen Sampson, which will open at !0:30 a.m.

Caring Contact Names Janet Sarkos of Westfield Executive Director
