Rutgers Alumna Among 20 Killed in Mali Terrorist Siege

PISCATAWAY, NJ – An outpouring of condolences flooded social media today to remember Anita Ashok Datar, an American woman killed during the deadly attack on the Radisson Blu Hotel in Bamako, Mali on Friday, Nov. 20.

“As a Peace Corps volunteer, expert in global health and the mother of a young boy, Anita Ashok Datar devoted her life to caring for and helping others,” her family said in a statement. “Everything she did in her life she did to help others — as a mother, public health expert, daughter, sister and friend."

Datar, 41, was born in Massachusetts and grew up in New Jersey.  In 1995, she graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Psychology from Rutgers University, and then spent two years in Senegal, Africa with the Peace Corps.

Today, Rutgers University issued a statement on her death. “The university community is saddened and horrified by this senseless tragedy in Mali that took so many innocent lives, including the life of a member of the Rutgers family,” reported Rutgers Today. “Anita Ashok Datar was an outstanding Rutgers graduate with a bright future and a commitment to helping others. We mourn her loss and offer our deepest condolences and support to her family and friends.”

At the time of her tragic death, Datar was a senior manager at Palladium Group, a company that focuses on international development.

In a statement from Palladium, they said, “Ms. Datar had spent more than a decade pursuing global public health, specifically reproductive health and HIV. Most recently, she was the Senior Director for Field Programs for HP+, a USAID-funded health policy project focused on improving reproductive health in developing countries. She will be remembered as a dedicated humanitarian and a trusted and beloved colleague.
