SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ - The South Brunswick Police Department in conjunction with the New Jersey Department of Transportation conducted a Commuter Van Inspection detail on Thursday, police said in a press release.
According to police, the detail focused on commuter vans transporting workers to and from area warehouses in South Brunswick from the New Jersey Turnpike Exit 8A.
In all, 20 commuter vans were inspected for illegal operation and safety, police said.
Nine of the commuter vans were taken out of service due to safety violations.
The checkpoint also found nine unlicensed drivers operating the vans and one driver with a suspended license, and one van had no insurance, police said.
According to police,  total of 80 summonses were issued during the inspection
Several commuter van owners were also issued summonses for allowing the unlicensed drivers to operate them, police said.
The commuter van inspection effort stems from a serious crash 20 years ago involving commuter vans that were found to be unsafe.
