SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ – Thankfully no one was hurt after a tractor-trailer crashed into the Ridge Road New Jersey Turnpike overpass Tuesday afternoon, throwing a forklift through the protective fence and onto the roadway.

The truck was traveling north on the Turnpike at milepost 75.5 in the outer lanes when it hit the bridge underneath Route 522 around 12:03 p.m., police said.

The impact threw a forklift carried on the truck up and through the protective screening fence and onto Ridge Road.

No one was injured, police said.

A limousine driver traveling west on Ridge Road narrowly avoided the forklift as it slammed through the screen and across Ridge Road by about 15-20 seconds, said secretary Maria Lepri of First Class Limousine in Englishtown.

Lepri said her driver was on his way to Belle Meade to pick up clients in one of the company’s 14-passenger vehicles when he saw the forklift fly across the road in front of him.

“It just missed him,” Lepri said. “He called in right after. He was shaken up.”

Lepri said the driver continued to pick up his passengers.

Police said that Middlesex County road crews were on their way to the scene to see the damage to the fence and to Ridge Road.

Local police did not know what actions the state or Turnpike Authority would be taking to assess the damage to the bridge on that road.

State Police spokesman Sgt. First Class Gregory Williams said that engineers would evaluate the bridge “from top to bottom,” and that there was no other damage to the Turnpike.

The incident backed up northbound traffic on the Turnpike for several miles, police said.
