ELIZABETH, NJ – A three alarm fire destroyed two houses in the vicinity of 640 Fulton Street yesterday afternoon, April 2. No injuries were reported.
Both houses were fully involved with heavy smoke conditions reported.
“There was a lot of smoke, and we had to leave the house,” said Luis Martinez who lives two houses away from the fire. “This was a big fire.”
Water company assistance was requested to increase pressure in the main to combat the fire. Multiple supply lines were needed. A number of fire departments and EMS teams the surrounding communities also responded.
The house at 640 Fulton was vacant. The collapse of both structures was due to chimney and roof instability.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The next day, strong winds pulled down electric lines on Franklin Street, directly around the corner from the fire site. Elizabeth fire department blocked off the area.
