UNION COUNTY, NJ – The many roads of Union County, including the Turnpike, Newark Airport, the Goethal’s Bridge, the Garden State Parkway, Route 22 and Route 78, are reported to be clear and the storm’s impact “appears to be minimal at this point,” according to Union County spokesperson Sebastian D’Elia.

“Since this storm is mostly during the regular working day, we have a full contingent of staff,” said D’Elia. About 75 to 80 employees between Parks Maintenance and Public Works are currently on the job clearing 352 lane miles of roadway and parks facilities, and close to 400 bridges and culverts also being cleaned. The County Public Works Department has about 65 to 70 pieces of equipment on the road. All of the tandem dump trucks are a combination of salt spreaders and plows. Smaller non spreader vehicles are at work at all of the facilities’ parking lots, and a full repair staff is on board in the mechanic shop in Scotch Plains. The County of Union, the City of Linden, Plainfield, Springfield, and Cranford have also opened up their emergency operations centers.

“We also have Lastly, we urge all residents to stay off roads, and travel only as needed,” advises D’Elia. “Check on your neighbors, especially if they are elderly and be mindful of any pets who are outdoors.”
