SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- Scotch Plains-Fanwood wrestlers finished fourth overall in the team competition, while Jack Canon (152 lbs.) and Sam Wustefeld (195 lbs.) were crowned champions of their respective weight classes at the District 13 tournament hosted at SPFHS on Saturday, Feb. 18,

It took Wustefeld, who started the day with a record of 34-1, just 10 seconds to pin his opponent, Summit's Jack Hedges, in the finals to win his third district title in a row. He also pinned his quarterfinal Drew Mitzak of Seton Hall Prep, (see video below) and semifinal opponent, Nour Sayed of Elizabeth.

Canon beat Alex Dorce of Linden in a 10-3 decision. He defeated his semifinal opponent, Michael Massa of Seton Hall Prep, by a 5-4 decision.

"They (Canon and Wustefeld) both came into this tournament on a mission; they're here to work for a title," said assistant coach Jesse Martinez. "This district is one of the toughest in the state, and to place first here speaks volumes to the mission they are on."

Wustefeld, Canon, and Palazzolo, who placed third in the 170 lb. weight class, will move on to the Regional Tournament next weekend at Union High School. The three seniors are co-captains of this year's varsity wrestling team.

Three Raider wrestlers finished in fourth place: seniors Jeremy Lenart (126 lbs.) and Jacob Perone (132 lbs.) finished fourth, as did freshman phenom Kyle Robinson (120 lbs.)

"Everyone today gave their all. While I'm disappointed it didn't work out in their favor, they have no reason to hang their heads down," Coach Martinez added. "Kyle Robinson's progress has been unbelievable. To place fourth in one of the state's toughest districts as a freshman says a lot about him."
